Hot Weather, High Risk: Summer Fire Safety Tips
As temperatures rise across the South Sound, so does the risk of fires — both wildland and residential. At SE Thurston Fire Authority, we want our community in Yelm, Rainier, and the surrounding areas to enjoy summer safely. Hot, dry conditions can quickly turn a spark into a serious fire, so staying alert and taking simple precautions can make all the difference.
Here are some key fire safety tips to keep you, your family, and your property safe during summer heat waves:
Avoid Outdoor Burning
High temperatures and dry vegetation create the perfect conditions for wildfires. Even a small backyard burn pile or campfire can get out of control in a matter of minutes.
- Burn bans may be in effect—check the latest status before lighting anything.
- Never burn during windy conditions.
- Always have a water source and shovel nearby, and never leave a fire unattended.
- When in doubt — don’t burn.
Create Defensible Space Around Your Home
Help protect your home by creating a defensible zone that slows or stops fire spread.
- Clear dry grass, leaves, and pine needles at least 30 feet from structures.
- Trim low tree branches and remove dead vegetation.
- Keep gutters, roofs, and decks clear of debris.
- A well-maintained property gives firefighters a better chance of defending your home if a wildfire approaches.
Be Fire-Safe While Driving
Something as simple as a car can start a fire on a hot day.
- Don’t park on dry grass — your vehicle’s exhaust system can ignite it.
- Make sure chains on trailers aren’t dragging and creating sparks.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in your vehicle during fire season.
Use Electrical Equipment Safely
Hot weather can push electrical systems to the limit.
- Don’t overload extension cords or outlets with fans and AC units.
- Unplug nonessential electronics when not in use.
- If you see frayed cords or smell burning plastic, unplug the device and call a licensed electrician.
Practice Safe Recreation
Camping and outdoor cooking are summer favorites — but be smart:
- Use designated fire pits only, and extinguish campfires completely.
- Keep barbecues away from dry grass and wooden decks.
- Never use fireworks in wooded areas or near dry brush.
Know What to Do in an Emergency
If you see smoke or flames:
- Call 9-1-1 immediately.
- Be ready to evacuate quickly if directed by fire officials.
- Have a go-bag prepared with essentials like medications, water, clothing, and important documents.
